FACTS!
- Some 65% of people with diabetes live in developing countries and account for only 30% of the world's total insulin usage each year. This is in sharp contrast to the industrialized world that has 35% of the world's diabetic population but account for about 70% of the world's total insulin usage each year.
- There are three type of diabetes, Type 1: diagnosed in children and adolescents, where the pancreas is unable to produce insulin. Approximately 10% of diabetics have type 1.
- Second type, is type 2 diabetes, where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Approximately 90% of diabetics have type 2.
- The third type is gestational diabetes, is a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. It affects approximately 2 to 4 per cent of all pregnancies and involves an increased risk of developing diabetes for both mother and child.
- If you are 40 years or older, you are a risk of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and you should be tested at least once every three years.
